Health Notes from the Parish Nurse

Health Notes from the Parish Nurse

Submitted by Mary Sophia Hawks, Parish Nurse

In September, Jane Mason will begin leading a grief support group. Jane has a wonderful background in hospice, and has developed a grief support group for all kinds of grief. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a job, a pet, a mentor, or a life change, all are welcome. Community Cares will be bringing in a speaker on caregiving, more information to come.

Messiah will be hosting a Health Fair on Saturday, October 6, 2018. (No UT game that day!) I am so excited for this program! This will require a wide range of volunteers for greeting, registration, directions, manning a Messiah information booth, etc. Please watch the corkboard outside the parish nurse office regularly for updates.

Mosquito on ArmMosquito season is upon us! Everyone is at risk.  Prevention is the best way to avoid getting a virus from mosquitoes. They bite during the day and night, live indoors and outdoors, and search for warm places as temperatures begin to drop. Some will hibernate in enclosed spaces, like garages, sheds and under homes to survive cold temperatures.

Standing water is the breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disease epidemics from viruses spread by mosquitoes are happening more often, including the recent Zika(2015-2017) and chikungunya (2013-2014) epidemics. West Nile virus is the most common virus spread by mosquitoes in the continental United States.

The Center for Disease Control has the following recommendations.

Protect against mosquito bites:

Use insect repellent: When used as directed, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Use an (EPA)-registered insect repellent with one of the following active ingredients:

  • DEET
  • Picaridin
  • IR3535
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
  • Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
Cover up:
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Keep mosquitoes outside:
  • Use air conditioning or window and door screens.
  • If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net.
Great health and God’s blessings to you!
